Best indoor plants for beginners in Pakistan

If you have never kept a houseplant alive, start with a money plant, snake plant, spider plant or jade plant. These four forgive the two mistakes every beginner makes — watering too much and putting the plant in the wrong light — and they are all familiar, affordable and easy to find in Pakistan.

Understand light before you buy anything

Most beginner failures are light failures. “Indoor bright” means a spot near a window where you could comfortably read a book all day without switching on a light. “Bright shade” means a covered veranda or a spot that sees plenty of sky but no direct sun. Neither means a dark corridor or a windowless bathroom — no plant is a “no light” plant, whatever the label says. Before buying, stand in the spot you have in mind at midday and be honest about how bright it really is.

The four best first plants

• Money plant — grows in soil or a jar of water, trails nicely from a shelf, and clearly droops when thirsty so it tells you what it needs. Prefers bright indirect light. Toxic if eaten, so place away from small children and pets.
• Snake plant — the most forgiving of all; it tolerates lower light and being ignored for a while. The only way most people kill one is by overwatering. Also toxic if eaten.
• Spider plant — fast-growing, safe-looking arching leaves, happy on a desk or in a hanging pot in bright indirect light. Brown leaf tips are usually a water-quality or dry-air reaction, not a disease.
• Jade plant — a compact succulent that likes a bright windowsill and very infrequent watering; a good choice if you travel often.

Watering: the finger test

Forget fixed schedules. Push your finger two to three centimetres into the soil. Dry at that depth? Water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage hole, then empty the saucer. Still moist? Wait and check again in a few days. In a Pakistani summer this may mean watering a money plant twice a week; in winter the same plant may need water only every ten days or more. The soil decides, not the calendar.

Simple setup rules

• Always use a pot with a drainage hole — a beautiful pot without one is a root-rot trap.
• Keep new plants out of direct afternoon sun through glass; it can scorch indoor foliage.
• Wipe dust off leaves occasionally so they can use the light they get.
• In winter, move plants back from cold single-glazed windows at night and reduce watering.
• Do not repot or feed a plant in its first few weeks at home; let it settle first.

What a beginner should skip for now

Skip delicate ferns, fussy flowering houseplants and anything described as needing high humidity. Get one season of success with the easy four first — the confidence and the habit of checking soil are what make every plant after that easier.
